Doodle Colors & Genetics

A comprehensive guide to understanding Doodle coat patterns

    Temperament comes first.

A puppy's coloring is sadly often times the deciding factor when choosing a dog. At Southern Doodle Co, we breed our exceptional pairings to produce very specific, highly-sought after coats and coloring. However, that should never be the only reason to choose a specific puppy. Always look at temperament and personality first when selecting your family's newest addition!

    The Genetic Spectrum

What exactly makes a Merle, a Phantom, or a Tri-color? Let's dive deep into the DNA sequences that produce these jaw-dropping coats.

    M Locus

    The Merle Coat

The Merle pattern creates beautifully mottled patches of color in a solid or piebald coat. It dilutes random sections of hair to a lighter color (like blue/gray or pale red), leaving striking patches of the original color. Common variations include Blue Merle and Red Merle.

    Agouti Locus

    The Phantom Coat

Phantom is a specific two-tone pattern defined by the a^t allele. These dogs have a solid base color (often Black or Brown) with sharply defined, lighter markings on specific areas: the eyebrows, muzzle, chest, lower legs, and under the tail. Examples include Brown Phantom and Black/Tan Phantom.

    Abstract Spotting Pattern Example
    S Locus

    Abstract / Parti

The White Spotting (S Locus) gene prevents pigment cells from producing color in certain areas, leaving them strikingly white. "Abstract" generally refers to a solid dog with less than 50% white (often a flash on the chest or paws), while "Parti" dogs are more than 50% white with large patches of solid color.

    Tri-Color

Tri-color dogs are genetic masterpieces that combine multiple traits at once! A true Tri-color typically expresses the Phantom pattern alongside abstract white spotting. When mixed with the Merle gene, you get incredibly rare coats like the Blue Merle Tri or Blue Merle Phantom Abstract.

Southern Doodle Co holds strict standards for ethical breeding. Because the Merle allele is dominant, producing a Merle puppy requires only one parent to carry the trait. We strictly adhere to safe breeding practices—meaning we never pair two Merle dogs together, to entirely eliminate the risk of "Double Merle" health complications (such as congenital deafness or blindness).
